Gary Bauer: Out of Touch

Bauer opposes the creation of a Palestinian state and a two-state solution – the only way to secure Israel’s Jewish, democratic future.

“God granted the Land of Israel to the Jewish people and there is an absolute ban on giving it away to another people.” [1]

Bauer compared US opposition to settlement expansion to the segregation of Jews into ghettos: “The segregation of Jews in ghettos and state control of their living arrangements does not seem like just a historical footnote when you consider the Obama Administration’s response to Jews building in their own capital.” [2]

Bauer sees the United States as a Christian nation, and opposes a separation between church and state. [3]

Bauer believes in teaching creationism in science classes. [4]

By contrast, 77% of American Jews believe Darwin’s theory of evolution provides the “best explanation for the origins of human life on earth.” [5]

Bauer opposes a woman’s right to choose, including in the case of rape. [6]

Bauer has led a number of extreme right-wing anti-choice organizations, including the Family Research Council, American Values, and the Campaign for Working Families. [7]

Bauer supports the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade, the court decision that ensures a woman’s right to choose. [8]

By contrast, 76% of Jews support a women’s right to choose. [8]

Bauer opposes gay marriage and believes homosexuality is a sin.

In response to California’s Supreme Court decision to overturn Prop. 8, Bauer said it “foreshadows a nation in which all citizens will not only be asked to tolerate same-sex marriage, but be required to promote it.” [9]

“Social order seeks a ‘social good.’ For homosexual activists and their allies, that ‘good’ is not tolerance but the enforced public acceptance of homosexuality as a positive lifestyle.” [10]

By contrast, 81% of Jews support gay marriage, 86% say it’s not a threat to traditional marriage, and 93% support civil unions. 77% say not allowing same sex couples to get married is discrimination. 65% of Jews believe ending discrimination against gays is as necessary today as ending discrimination against blacks was in the 1960s, and 82% of Jews believe homosexuality is something people are born with.
